Join Us in Honoring Teamster Women

Message from Women's Conference Director, Sue Mauren

Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day on March 8 provide us with the opportunity to commemorate women’s achievements, in particular the achievements of Teamster women. Teamster women have made significant contributions to the work force over the years, bravely fighting for worker justice. Teamster women, in particular, have been engaged and active politically, socially and economically, helping pass important legislation, volunteering in their communities and making life better for us all.

Women now make up more than 45 percent of unionized workers. In the next 10 years, women will be the majority of union workers. This is significant because it reflects a growing diversity in the labor movement and the work force. As women make up a larger percentage of the work force, it becomes even more critical that women workers continue to organize their workplaces.

According to the Center for Economic and Policy Research, joining a union raises the chances a woman will have health insurance more than a four-year college degree and it raises a woman’s wage as much as a full year of college. Union women earn about 32 percent more than nonunion women. Meanwhile, thanks in great part to the courage, hard work and sacrifice of Teamster women, standards have been raised for workers throughout the nation.

Join us in celebrating women’s achievements! Keep checking this web site throughout the month for the photos and stories of the trailblazing Teamster women who are making history.

If you have a unique story you would like to share, please email us.
